Obviously the players deserve credit for recording the Black Knights’ most wins in 22 years. The Academy, which started 9-2, went on to the program’s best record since 1984-85. But you must also give some of the credit to Head Coach Jim Crews, who recruited those players and guided them to 10 more wins than they had the previous season.
In the backcourt it all starts at the point where Marcus Nelson (3.1 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.5 apg) will compete against fellow sophomore Josh Miller (3.7 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 1.2 apg) for the starting job. 6-0 Miller is a little taller and a little more offensive minded than the 5-10 Nelson, but Nelson is a bit better defender. Cleveland Richard (2.7 ppg, 1.3 ppg) and Tyrell Thompson (2.7 ppg, 1.3 rpg) will also figure in the backcourt mix. Richard is a 6-4 sophomore who started 15 games last season, Thompson 6-3, is another sophomore, the lefty hit 57.1 percent of his shots in limited action a year ago.
In the frontcourt the center position appears settled with junior Doug Williams (3.7 ppg, 4.2 rpg) and sophomore Chris Walker (5.3 ppg, 3.9 rpg), they combined last season to give the Black Knights a post presence they had lacked in recent years. At one wing the most likely guy candidate is Jarell Brown, a 6-2 senior who averaged 16.9 point – third best in the league – off the bench last season. From the four spot 6-5 junior Kenny Brewer (2.8 ppg, 1.8 rpg) is the incumbent after starting 24 games last season, Corban Bates (3.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg), a 6-4 senior started 5 games and actually played more minutes than Brewer. John Moonshower (1.1 ppg, 1.1 rpg), a 6-5 junior who could also see time at the small forward spot, and 6-7 sophomore Eric Zastoupil (1.9 ppg, 0.3 rpg) will also be in the mix. None of the four is a particularly gifted offensive player. That could provide an opportunity for 6-10 sophomore Will Schuh to find some minutes at the four.
With seven players back who started at least five games, including conference player of the year candidate Jerrell Brown, the Black Knights appear poised to not only record their first winning season since 1985, but to challenge for a spot in the upper division of the Patriot League and get 18 wins.
