Head Coach Gary Williams is used to turnover and depending on youth to help this program. This year is no different. Gone from last year's 25 win team is DJ Strawberry, Mike Jones, and Ekene Ibekwe. Williams has a host of young big man arriving to fortify his program. He also has two sophomore guards that were outstanding last year and should continue to progress this year.
In the frontcourt Senior forward James Gist is the lone returning big man and will be depended upon to provide from scoring. Bambale Osby is a wide load at forward and will step into a larger role this year. Braxton Dupree is a name that we will watch. The 6'8" forward will be a good one. Jerome Burney will also give the young frontcourt some depth.
Last year backcourt men Eric Hayes and Greivis Vasquez were heralded freshman guards. This year they will provide the scoring in defense to help the Terrapins be competitive in the tough Atlantic Coast conference.
Gary Williams in his 19th year at Maryland did one of his finest coaching jobs last year with young players winning 25 games. If he is to duplicate that feat freshmen in the backcourt and frontcourt must contribute. He's done this before and we feel they'll do it again. Williams knack for getting the most out of his talent will come in handy this year.
Maryland's schedule should provide some easy victories early with such teams as Northeastern, Lehigh, Morgan State, Ohio, Delaware, American University, and Savannah State. They do play Illinois in the Big 10-ACC shoot out and go to the O'Reilly Auto Parts Classic to participate in a 16 team tournament.
Maryland led the conference in field goal percentage defense last year. They're well coached, they are certainly young, but they will be a factor in the ACC conference and we feel they will win 22 to 24 games this year.
