The Grizzlies return three starters for second year Head Coach Wayne Tinkle. “We have a challenging early-season schedule, and we will use that as an opportunity for our young players to get rolling in time for league.”Montana is coming off a 17-15 season and third-place (10-6) Big Sky Conference and has a relatively young roster made up of just two seniors, five juniors, four sophomores, and four freshmen.

The Guards -- 6-1 sophomore guard Cameron Rundles is a key returnee, as he was the team’s fourth-leading scorer (8.3 ppg) and last year’s Big Sky “Freshman of the Year.” He started in 23 of UM’s last 24 games and was ranked second in the Big Sky in three-point field goal percentage (.478). Senior guard Matt Martin (6-0), a three-year letterman, had 20 starts last season and was UM’s fifth-leading scorer at 6.7 points a game. Other veteran returnees include 6-4 sophomore guard Ryan Staudacher, a deadly three-point shooter who came on strong, 6-4 junior guard Greg Spurgetis and 6-2 redshirt freshman guard Zach Graves. The Griz added a quality point guard in 6-2 Ceylon Elgin-Taylor from Irvine Valley College (Calif.).

The Forwards --6-8 senior forward Andrew Strait and 6-9 junior forward Jordan Hasquet Montana’s top scorers a year ago, averaging 15.0 and 13.0 points a game respectively, which ranked them sixth and 15th in the league. They also led the Griz in rebounds with 6.4 a game each, the eighth highest average in the conference. Other veteran returnees include 6-7 junior forward Kyle Sharp who is a versatile player who can play all three post positions.

The Center -- 7-0 sophomore center Dave Vanderjagt returns. Two outstanding preps are also in the mix, although one or more of them may redshirt, 6-11 center Brian Qvale (Williston High School, North Dakota), and 7-0 forward-center Derek Selvig (Dawson County High School, Glendive, Mont.).

This is a top tier Big Sky team, but it's crowded there in the Big Sky. It's hard to imagine that there not better this season, the non-conference schedule will allow them to win only 17 games.
