The up-and-coming Mount is fresh off its first NEC Tournament win in seven years and is 20-16 in league play over the past two seasons. This year’s cast returns three starters for Head Coach Milan Brown who’ll be entering his 5th season still looking for his first winning campaign.
The Mount return their starting backcourt of 6-0 senior Chris Vann (13.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg) and 5-9 sophomore point guard Jeremy Goode (10.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 5.0). The guard duo combined for 94 steals on a defense that allowed the second fewest points (64.5 ppg) in NEC play last season and help opponents to 41.8 percent shooting from the field. Vann also knows his way to the basket, leading the team in scoring and three-pointers (64-of-177, .361) a year ago. The Mount’s backcourt returns two talented sophomore swingmen in 6-5 Kelly Beidler (5.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg) and 6-4 Will Holland (5.5 ppg, 2.1 rpg).
In the frontcourt juniors Sam Atupem (5.7 ppg, 3.4 rpg) and Markus Mitchell (4.9 ppg, 3.5) both return up front and figure to be there on opening night. The Mount also has 7-0 senior Jason Loughry (1.8 ppg, 1.6 rpg), who figures to play in the a rotation. The rest of the frontcourt is made up of freshmen, including 6-7 Tayvon Jackson, who red-shirted last season. The other freshmen are all 6-7 forwards, and include Atupem’s brother, Shawn Atupem, John Schwarz and Danny Thompson. Also, 6-5 freshman Pierre Brown arrives from Jamestown high I Virginia, where he averaged 18.1 points and 9.0 rebounds as an all-state selection.
With a defense-first attitude and a talented backcourt, this team has a good shot to competetive night in and night out in the Northeast Conference. Look for Brown to record his first winning record and for the Mountaineers to win 16 games.
