The Bison are reclassifying to Division I this season, This Summit League newcomer brings enough credentials to the table that it should contend for the regular-season title this season. The Bison return four starters, from a team that finished 20-8 last season as an independent.
Brett Winkelman and Mike Nelson, who averaged a combined 31.8 points, give the Bison a balanced scoring attack that will be formidable for teams to defend. First-year Head Coach Saul Phillips, a former Bison assistant, has plenty to prove, especially after graduation leading scorer and rebounder Andrew Smith. At least he has four returning starters, including point guard Ben Woodside, who averaged 16.4 points and 5.1 assists last season, and forward Brett Winkelman, who averaged 16.1 points and 6.8 rebounds. The return of guard Mike Nelson (15.7 ppg) helps strengthen the perimeter.
North Dakota St played good teams tough last season and beat Marquette. They return four starters, led by point guard Ben Woodside, look for the Bison to get 16 wins.
