Head Coach Eddie Biedenbach, who’ll be entering his 12th season welcomes back four senior starters, which includes his top three scorers and his leading rebounder. The Bulldogs won but 12 games last season but Biedenbach believes they have chance to be good if the “Big Man” 7-7 Kenny George can contribute 15-20 minutes this season.
The emerging backcourt combo of fifth-year seniors J.J. Garland (12.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 4.2 apg) and Bryan Smithson (14.6 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 1.9 spg)is solid. The 6-1 Garland may be one of the most underrated players in the Big South. His assist to turnover ratio was better than 2-to-1. The 6-0 Smithson, a transfer from Middle Tennessee, lead the team in scoring and was the conference’s leader in free-throw percentage (.852), he was also fourth in steals. 6-0 sophomore Donovan Jones (4.8 ppg, 3.3 rpg) is a solid defender, he was a BSC All-Freshman selection a year ago. Another sophomore, 6-6 Sean Smith (4.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg), appeared in 26 games and he’ll help.
In the frontcourt you must start with7-7, 335-pound junior center Kenny George (5.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.0 bpg).
He does have some skills but is limited as well. Vincent James (9.2 ppg, 3.5 rpg) came in as a transfer and will start, he possesses good athleticism. Fellow 6-7 senior Garrett Moles (3.2 ppg, 2.6 rpg) and junior Reid Augst (6.3 ppg, 1.8 rpg) will also play small forward. Ashville has recruited size led by 6-7 junior Andrew Lomond, a 255-pounder who could be the key to the incoming class. Add in red-shirt freshman John Williams, a 6-4 studand a couple of freshmen Rashad Gill, a skilled 6-5 athlete and a long, lean 6-8 Eric Stubbs.
The backcourt is again solid, UNCA will be much improved. The schedule is filled with their usual money games, so the won-loss record heading to conference play will be less than stellar. Look for a run at the conference title and for the Bulldogs to get 18 wins.
