Season 08-09 Standings
Head Coach - San Jose St was 5-7 a year ago for Dick Tomey who’ll be entering his 4th year, they took a step back last year following their nine win season in 06’ but the Spartans have upgraded their talent under Tomey and are headed in the right direction. They return eleven starters and they schedule sets up much better than a year ago, expectations in San Jose are for a return to post season play in 08’.
Quarterback - They key this season will be the QB for the Spartans, if neither junior Myles Eden or Cal transfer Kyle Reed steps up, things could get ugly. For San Jose St to have a successful running game the passing game needs to be there and as of right now that is not happening.
Running Backs - Fans is San Jose right now want one thing and this for All-WAC running back Yonus Davis to be granted a sixth year of eligibility. The running game was not that good last year and even though both starters return that really isn’t a good thing.
Receivers - One of the bright spots for San Jose St this year is at wide receiver, with seniors Kevin Jurovich and David Richmond returning the Spartans have a solid core to build off of. Look for whoever fills the third spot to have a good season as the opposing secondary will be matched up one on one.
Offensive Line - The O-Line returns 3 starters in sophomores Fred Koloto at left tackle, sophomore Issac Leatiota at left guard and at center is junior Ronnie Castillo. The other 2 new starters must perform at the same level as the returning starters or the Spartans will be in trouble. With a new QB and questions still at running back, the O-Line will be asked to pick up the slack this year.
Defensive Line - San Jose St might have the best D-Line in the WAC, especially when it comes to pass rushing situations, they were at their best last year against NMSU and Hawaii; teams pass the ball at least 75% of the time. The D-Line returns 3 starters in Gilbert, Davis, and Ihenacho all fast physical players. But the D-Line is highlighted by Jeff Schweiger at D-End who didn’t even play last year because he transferred from USC and had to sit out; he’s a former Parade All-American.
Linebackers - The Spartans lost two very talented starters at LB from last year, but this does not mean they are in a whole lot of trouble. At least 10 players from spring ball could start this year, and competition does create motivated players. The one starter returning for the core is Justin Cole who last year started at DE but moved to allow Schweiger to step in up front.
Defensive Backs - This year Dick Tomey believes that his secondary will be as good as last year’s, which means they will be able to replace All-American Dwight Lowry without skipping a beat, I don’t think so Dick. With one returning starter, Chris Owens it could be a long year in the secondary Oregon State transfer Coye Francies is expected to step right in from day one.
Special Teams -
Schedule - For the Spartans to have a successful season must find a solid starting QB who can stay calm under pressure, the QB must be able to play in a lot of 30-40 point games in the WAC. The defense might be a little weak at secondary but if that amazing D-Line gets a good pass rush no one will ever notice. The Spartans will need all the pieces to come it they hope to be in the running for a bowl game. The Spartans will fall short this season and they’ll end the year with only 5 wins.
